Program Description

Event Details

Naturalist, wildlife photographer and author/writer Stan Tekiela, originator of the popular state-specific field guides such as Birds of Illiinois Field Guide, Trees of Illinois Field Guide and many more, will present fascinating facts and tidbits about some of the birds people love to hate along with some of the more common birds in our yards. Get ready to challenge your preconceived ideas about European Starlings, American Crows, and many more. You'll never look at these birds the same way again!

Copies of Stan's books will be available for purchase and signing at the event courtesy of Read Between the Lynes bookstore of Woodstock.

This event is part of the McHenry County Libraries - Let's All Read Together community reading program and sponsored by Algonquin Area Public Library, Cary Area Public Library, Crystal Lake Public Library, Harvard-Diggins Library, Huntley Area Public Library, Johnsburg Library, Marengo-Union Library, McHenry Public Library, Nippersink Public Library and Woodstock Public Library.

We are pleased to welcome local nature organizations to the event as well:  McHenry County Conservation District and Foundation, The Land Conservancy of McHenry County, Illinois DNR - Moraine Hills/Volo Bog, McHenry County Audubon Society, Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, Small Water Education, Illinois Fish and Wildlife Service and the Crystal Lake Nature Center will have tables with educational information in the lobby.

Over the past four decades Stan has authored more than 200 field guides, nature appreciation books and wildlife audio CDs for nearly every state in the nation, presenting many species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, trees, wildflowers and cacti.  Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural History from the University of Minnesota and as an active professional naturalist for more than 40 years, Stan studies and photographs wildlife throughout the United States and has received various national and regional awards for his books and photographs.  Also a well-known columnist and radio personality, his syndicated column appears in over 20 newspapers and his wildlife programs are broadcast on a number of Midwest radio stations. He is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association and Canon Professional Services along with many other professional organizations.
